Scan Your Environment
The world is changing at an accelerating rate. What we knew to be true yesterday may not be today. Our explanations for why things happen the way they do may not be accurate. Our expertise in certain areas may keep us from seeing that.
New patterns emerge and disappear. Windows of opportunity open and close. The only way to take advantage of the changing environment and grow and thrive is to regularly scan your environment. Look at new things. Look at old things in a new way. Be willing to be surprised.
Many people feel overwhelmed at the prospect of having to learn new things. They are busy and don’t want to add another task to an already full plate. They don’t even want to think about where to look for new things.
Here are some suggestions:
- Cruise the book stores. Scan through books you wouldn’t ordinarily read. Read the work of authors that you don’t agree with. Read them with an open mind.
- Scan magazines you wouldn’t ordinarily read. Scan the magazines that put you on edge.
- Explore the Internet. See where your searches lead you.
- Explore museums. Go to museums that you would not ordinarily visit.
- Read the Salon books. Come to the salons and join the discussion even if you haven't completely read the book.
